After spending an afternoon cleaning the sooty apartment-to-be floor, with occcasional breaks to scoop up loose plaster, I was greeted with this observation. He was probably quite right. To imagine the amount of soot I was wearing, you have to see the floor.
This photo shows the difference between the clean(er) floor and the truly sooty floor.
Changing it from 'before' to 'after' is a four step process. First, we used a mechanical buffer to loosen the top layers of soot. Then we vaccuumed (yes, Mom, I wore a mask.) The third step was to buff again with a little non-flammable cleaning fluid. Fourth, we wiped up the wet soot with rags. Each rag lasts about 2 minutes - then it's full of black slime and has to be retired. At the end of the day, the rags and my clothing go through the washing machine - twice! and the floor buffer pad and I go into the shower.
I wouldn't say that the floor is ready for finishing after all this, but it's certainly close!

Looks like good, not-so-clean indoor work.
Those of you with real mothers like mine will not be surprised to learn that when I described the floor cleaning process to my mom (after this was posted), the first thing she said was, "Did you wear a mask?"
She wasn't satisfied with hearing that I had anticipated her question and posted the answer before she asked.
Mom HAD to know.
